Botox Treatment

You probably don't think about getting Botox injections whenever you go to the dentist. While Botox has become popular for its esthetic indications, it can also be therapeutically beneficial. At Ryba Dentistry, we are proud to offer Botox treatment and educate patients on its many uses. Here's what you should know about how Botox injections could benefit you before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Ryba and our friendly team.

What is Botox?

Botox is a brand of botulinum toxin -  a medication injected into musculature to relax muscle tension. Esthetically, it is used to relax facial muscles, which smooths the overlying skin, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkling. This esthetic use is especially effective around the eyes, eyebrows, and forehead. Therapeutically, it is injected into the muscles that are activated when unintentionally clenching or grinding, which alleviates jaw muscle soreness. Many patients also report alleviation of migraine symptoms after Botox therapy.

How Does Botox Injection Therapy Work?

Botox works by temporarily blocking the neurotransmitters that control muscle tone. When these muscles are relaxed, it can help enhance your physical appearance and relieve facial discomfort, including TMJ pain and migraines.

Botox treatment offers several aesthetic and therapeutic benefits to patients of all ages. It's an excellent choice for anyone interested in reducing facial wrinkling or decreasing TMJ muscle pain from clenching.

Is Botox Treatment Safe?

Dentists, doctors, nurse practitioners, and all other providers of Botox must be certified in Botox administration. The botox dentists at our practice are certified via coursework with the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, which has trained over 16,000 medical professionals in administering Botox.

How Long Does Botox Treatment Last?

Botox can take up to two full weeks to take effect and lasts 3-4 months. There is no way to reverse the effects of Botox during the three months, so our providers are trained to take a minimal approach and add more if needed after two weeks, at which time the medication has taken full effect. This way, patients achieve the exact effects of botox treatment they desire.

Side Effects of Botox Treatment

The most common side effect of Botox is bruising and redness at the injection sites. Infrequent side effects include allergic reactions, temporary eyelid drooping, transient headache, temporary numbness at the injection sites, flu-like symptoms, weakened tear ducts, double vision, and post-treatment infection at the injection sites. Most patients report no side effects after botox treatment. Patients who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding should refrain from undergoing elective Botox injections.

Cost of Botox Therapy

The cost of Botox is determined by how many sites are treated.  Smoothing a single forehead wrinkle can cost as little as $100, whereas treating TMJ muscles to alleviate clenching soreness or addressing multiple wrinkling areas can cost significantly more. Schedule a Botox consultation today so our providers can tailor a treatment plan to your needs and give an exact estimate for your cosmetic treatment.
